Finals Day 2011 at RHP Bowls Club on 11th September

Despite earlier reports, Sunday turned out to be a clear and sunny, although breezy, day for bowls. Spectators and supporters gathered early to enjoy the spectacle.

The first games to get underway were the Fours and Pairs Finals.

Burnham(Alan Finch, Terry Everett,Tubs Olly and Darren Shipton) faced Southminster (Fred Brownson, Harry Sheppard, Pete Sullivan and Chris Brooks) in the fours on rink 1. The first few ends were shared equally but on the 6th end Burnham picked up 7 and were in the driving seat. By the 10th end they were 13-3 up and Southminster were struggling. On the 16th end Southminster picked up 4 to reduce the overall defecit to 4 shots but Burnham then picked up two 2s to hold the lead and win 21-15.

The Pairs game saw Falcon(Alf Allen and Ian Muir) playing Stock (Bob Pooley and Alan Hart). After 2 ends the Falcon pair found themselves 7 shots down but fought back to level the score at the 4th end 7-7. However from this point on Stock piled on the shots and by the 15th end were 21-14 up. Falcon never recovered and were chasing a lost cause. Stock ran out winners by 29 to 18.

The Officers Cup final was contested between Denis Sheldrake(Danbury) and Bill Wright (Southminster). Denis went into an early lead being 9-3 up after 8 ends. Bill rallied and was only 4 shots adrift at the 13th end but then dropped a 4 putting Denis 8 shots in the lead. The final outcome was a 21-12 win for Denis.

The 2 wood final saw Geoff Gasson(Maldon) playing the 14 times winner of the competition Andy Squire(Falcon). This was a closely fought game. By the 19th end Geoff was 14-8 up and going well, but 7 ends later Geoff found himself 14-15 down having not scored since end 19. The game took 33 ends to complete and Andy showed his consistency to run out the winner by 4 shots. The final score was Geoff 17 and Andy 21.

After a break for lunch the afternoon games started at 2.00pm.

In the triples Falcon (Alan Smith, Alf Allen and Ian Muir) played Maldon (Steve Mayhew, Mike Hartshorn and Geoff Gasson) Falcon started disasterously and found themselves 1-11 down after 4 ends, but things were to change dramatically. By the 11th end Falcon had rallied to go 17-13 up. In the following 6 ends Falcon scored 12 shots to Maldon's 1 to run out winners by 29 to 14.

In the Singles Champioship Graham Robson(Chelmsford played Andy Squire (Falcon). This was a game of 2 halves. By the 12th end Graham was 12-3 up but the following 9 ends saw Andy pick up 5 twos, 2 threes and 2 singles to run out winner by 21 to 12.

In the Champion of Champions Joe Embling(Tillingham) was drawn against Eddie Dennison (Billericay). This game was nip and tuck through the first 10 ends with Eddie just edging in front by 1 shot. Eddie then built on his lead to be 17-11 up by the 16th end. Joe fought back to be 19-18 up at end 22. By the 24th end it was 20-20 with all to play for. Joe picke up the all important 1 shot to win 21-20 in the end. A very close fought game worthy of the final.

In the Unbadged final Tom Anderson (Falcon) had to play Andy Evans (Burnham). Tom was 13-2 up after 11 ends and although a brief rally from Andy got him back to 13-7, Tom ran out the overall winner 21-8.

It was an excellent Finals Day played in good spirit. The games were enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike. President, Alby Evans presented the trophies and thank all concerned for a really enjoyable day
